Using Data Validation in Excel

On occasion, you may find that you need your users to enter data in a spreadsheet in a specific format. There are a few ways to do this, but I find the “Data Validation” feature easy to use and quick to set up.

Let’s get right into a few examples.

Enter Only Dates in a Specified Range

You’ve got a spreadsheet that you want the users to only be able to enter dates in a specific range.

Custom Error Message

Let’s take that same example and when the user enters an incorrect date, they will receive a specialized message.

Create a Drop-Down List

This is a fun one! You can create a drop-down list based on an existing list! The list can be on a separate sheet, but for this example I’ve kept it in one place.

What other ways can you think of using Data Validation? I’ve found it to eliminate a lot of errors and it’s easy to set up!
