Microsoft has released a couple of updates that we’d like you to install right now.
- The first one is an update for Outlook. A criminal has figured out how to send you a meeting invitation with a reminder. When the reminder kicks off, the ransomware is installed. Your data could then become encrypted and unrecoverable without backup.
If your office has a server, please install this update now. If your office doesn’t have a server, then it can wait until the next regular update cycle.
To install this update, open Outlook. Then click on the File menu at the top of the window. See the red ball in the figure below.
Then click on Office Account at the bottom of the left column. See the red ball in the figure to the left.
Now, choose Update options from the center of the screen and select update now, as shown in the figure below.
2. The second one is an update for Edge. A criminal has figured out how to break smartscreen. Smartsceen is used is so many areas of security on your computer. Even if you don’t use Edge, it needs to be updated so that Smartscreen will be protected from this exploit.
Everyone should install this update now.
To install the update for Edge, in Edge click the … in the upper right hand corner. See the red ball in the figure below.
Next, click on settings. You’ll find it near the bottom on the list that comes up.
In the settings list that the comes up, click on About Edge. It is also at the bottom of the list.
When you select About Edge it will start looking for updates to install. Continue installing updates until you have completed all available updates.
You’ll know that you’re done when you see a message like the one below.
