It’s the time of year when I like to spend some quality time with my Inbox – by getting rid of the newsletters I don’t have the time to read, the vendor emails that never stop and the rest of the junk.
Microsoft has spent a lot of developer time giving us the Other tab that automatically sorts our email based on our previous behavior into things we usually read right away and things we might read later. Then it also sends bulk email into the Junk folder. Even though we’re using programming magic to help clean up the volume of mail does put a strain on our computers. I for one would rather have my computer busy doing things I want rather than sorting mail I probably don’t want. The once a year email cleanse is a good habit.
We can help a lot by unsubscribing to things that we no longer want to see. Here’s how:
At the bottom or sometimes at the top of every email there will be an unsubscribe option. Click it.
Sometime large bulk email companies will have an additional hoop for you to jump through.
It takes between 10 and 30 seconds per email which doesn’t sound like a lot but it is an investment and one worth making that will make your new year just a little more pleasant.
