How to change your photos back to jpg on the iPhone

Suddenly you can’t view you photos in applications? Suddenly you can’t store your photos where you used to store them? Suddenly you can’t upload them onto your favorite photo sharing websites? It’s not a problem with your phone exactly, Apple planned it this way. Eventually it will be a good idea. The new photo format is called HEIF (High Efficiency Image Format) and the photos in this format take up a lot less place. If you’d like to know a bit more about this new format, wikipedia has an easy to understand article. Apple is the first one to make a big push into the new format. Unfortunately the file storage and sharing locations around the web aren’t ready yet. Hence the troubles you are seeing. Luckily you can switch back to JPG as your default.

Parrish has written up the simple 1,2,3 step process for you to follow.

With the release of iOS 11, Apple has changed the way photos and videos are saved. The new file formats do not currently have viewers for non-Mac operating systems. For any users who are not in a 100% Mac environment, we’re suggesting disabling the new formats for the time being. To do so, please follow the instructions below after upgrading your phone to iOS 11.

Access “Settings”, locate and tap “Camera”

iPhone settings

Next Tap “Formats”

Change to compatible format

And finally tap “Most compatible”

iPhone camera settings

That’s it. You’re now back to saving photos in JPG format. Sometime in the future you may want to switch back but you’ll want to wait until you hear the all clear from your file storage and file sharing applications.
